With many tumours, including brain tumours, the prognosis remains poor in spite of the most advanced surgical techniques, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which is why new treatment concepts are being investigated.
For instance, research is focusing on the possibilities of using the patient's own immune system against malignant tumour cells. This research in immunotherapy via vaccination is being conducted at the K.U.Leuven in cooperation with the Universities of Würzburg and Regensburg. It is being supported by the Olivia Hendrickx Research Fund in the framework of an agreement with Leuven University Hospital and the K.U.Leuven.
To develop this treatment for patients with brain tumours and also for patients with renal cell carcinoma, endometrial cancer and pancreatic cancer, a specific laboratory was created in June 2010 within Leuven University Hospital's Cell and Tissue Bank.
Thanks to the support of the Olivia Hendrickx Research Fund, we can pursue the vitally necessary preclinical research. We also have the guarantee that all patients who apply for this therapy will also effectively be able to receive this treatment. After all, the vaccination treatment is not yet reimbursed by the mutual health insurance companies. The production costs for the vaccines amount to approximately EUR 15,000 per patient.
On behalf of the patients and my fellow researchers, I thank the Olivia Hendrickx Research Fund, as well as all of the people who contribute to the realisation of this project via this Fund.
